What helps bring cholesterol down?

Saturated and trans fats — found in fried and bakery foods, fatty meat, cream, butter and ghee — push up LDL (“bad”) cholesterol the most, while soluble fibre (barley, beans, dal, oats), nuts, plant oils and a healthy weight help lower it. The generator leans towards high-fibre meals and keeps rich, high-calorie foods to a minimum.

Simple swaps

Swap this For this
Vanaspati, butter, ghee Measured teaspoons of olive, groundnut or mustard oil
Namkeen, pakora, fried samosa Fruit, makhana, roasted chana
Bakery items made with maida Whole-wheat roti, millets, oats
Processed and red meat Skinless chicken, fish, beans, dal
Lots of full-cream milk Low-fat or toned curd and milk

Foods that help lower cholesterol

  • Barley and oats (beta-glucan)
  • Soy, chana, rajma and dal
  • A small handful of nuts daily
  • Oily fish two times a week (omega-3)
  • Fruit and vegetables

For most people, eggs in moderation are fine — saturated fat matters more than the cholesterol in food. If your cholesterol is very high or high cholesterol runs in your family, you may need medicine alongside diet.

Your questions, answered

How soon will my cholesterol improve with diet?

LDL may begin to drop within 4–6 weeks on a diet with less saturated fat and more fibre. Get your lipid profile rechecked after roughly 3 months.

Should I stop eating ghee if my cholesterol is high?

Ghee is mainly saturated fat, so eating a lot of it raises LDL. A little now and then is fine; cook with plant oils day to day.

How many eggs are OK with high cholesterol?

Within a healthy diet, up to one egg daily is fine for most people. Cut back on fried eggs and the oil or butter used to cook them.
