A normal weight for your baby’s age

There is no one right size for a healthy baby. The WHO Child Growth Standards were built from healthy breastfed children, and anything from roughly the 3rd to the 97th percentile counts as the usual range. More important than any single weigh-in is that your baby keeps following a steady curve.

Age Boys: median (usual range) Girls: median (usual range)
Birth 3.3 kg (2.5–4.4) 3.2 kg (2.4–4.2)
3 months 6.4 kg (5.1–7.9) 5.8 kg (4.6–7.4)
6 months 7.9 kg (6.4–9.7) 7.3 kg (5.8–9.2)
9 months 8.9 kg (7.2–10.9) 8.2 kg (6.6–10.4)
12 months 9.6 kg (7.8–11.8) 8.9 kg (7.1–11.3)
2 years 12.2 kg (9.8–15.1) 11.5 kg (9.2–14.6)
3 years 14.3 kg (11.4–18.0) 13.9 kg (11.0–17.8)
5 years 18.3 kg (14.3–23.8) 18.2 kg (14.0–24.4)

Numbers are WHO medians, rounded; brackets show the 3rd to 97th percentile range. It is normal for newborns to drop up to 7–10% of their birth weight over the first few days and win it back by around 2 weeks; by 4–5 months most weigh twice what they did at birth, and around three times as much by their first birthday. For a full percentile including length and head size, open the baby growth percentile tool.

Common questions

How much does a typical 6-month-old weigh?

On WHO standards, boys average about 7.9 kg (usual range 6.4–9.7 kg) and girls about 7.3 kg (5.8–9.2 kg).

When is a baby’s weight a concern?

If it sits under the 3rd percentile, or drops across two percentile lines, ask your paediatrician to take a look.

Is weight gain different for breastfed babies?

Often they put on weight more quickly early on and more slowly afterwards. Because the WHO standards were built from breastfed babies, they match this pattern.

My newborn lost weight after birth — is that normal?

Yes, losing up to 7–10% in the first days is common, and most babies regain it by about 2 weeks. Tell your doctor if the loss is larger or slow to recover.
