Picking the right schedule for your baby
- India — IAP: followed by most private paediatricians and issued by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (ACVIP 2025). On top of the core vaccines it adds options such as MMR, varicella, hepatitis A, typhoid conjugate and flu.
- India — Government (UIP): the Universal Immunization Programme, offered at no cost through government health centres and hospitals. Covered vaccines: BCG, polio, pentavalent, rotavirus, PCV, MR, DPT boosters, plus JE where the district needs it.
- USA — CDC: the routine childhood schedule from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Type in your baby’s date of birth and you get each dose with the date it falls due, the next visit highlighted, and the option to add reminders to your calendar.
IAP and UIP compared: the main differences
| Vaccine | IAP (private) | UIP (government) |
|---|---|---|
| Polio | IPV injections at 6, 10, 14 weeks + boosters | OPV drops + fractional IPV at 6 & 14 weeks and 9 months |
| PCV | 6, 10, 14 weeks + booster at 15 months | 6 & 14 weeks + booster at 9–12 months |
| Measles | MMR at 9 & 15 months and 4–6 years | MR at 9–12 & 16–24 months |
| Extra in IAP | Flu (yearly), typhoid, hepatitis A, varicella, HPV | — |
Making vaccine visits easier
- Take the vaccination card along to every appointment.
- Breastfeeding while or just after the jab is given helps settle your baby.
- A slight temperature or crankiness for a day is normal; check paracetamol doses with your doctor.
- A missed dose can be caught up without starting again; your doctor will plan it.
USA update (2026): a revised CDC schedule released in January 2026 was halted by a US federal court that March; until that changes, cdc.gov still carries the 2025 schedule, which is what you see here. These vaccines remain on the American Academy of Pediatrics’ recommended list. For the newest advice, check with your paediatrician.
Common questions
Which jabs does a newborn get before leaving hospital in India?
Three at birth: BCG, the zero dose of oral polio (OPV-0) and the birth dose of hepatitis B, ideally given before discharge.
Should I pay for the optional vaccines?
The IAP recommends flu, typhoid, hepatitis A and varicella, yet the free government programme leaves them out. Your paediatrician can help you decide.
We are behind on a vaccine — now what?
See your doctor as soon as you can. A late dose rarely means beginning the course again — your doctor will map out a catch-up plan.
Can I switch from the government schedule to the IAP one?
Often yes, but the timing of the remaining doses may change, so ask your paediatrician to map out the switch.
