What is the best way to eat with PCOS?

No one diet is “the PCOS diet”, yet international guidelines share the same core advice: build meals from whole, minimally processed foods, pick low-glycaemic (low-GI) carbs, have fibre and protein each time you eat and, if you carry extra weight, aim for a moderate calorie deficit. Insulin resistance is common in PCOS, and these habits help keep insulin and blood sugar more stable.

The generator asks about your main priority. If it is weight loss, it applies a daily 500-calorie deficit (but never under 1,200); if it is regular cycles or conceiving, it uses a softer deficit only when your BMI is 25 or above. In every plan, refined flour and white rice are replaced with beans, dal, brown rice, oats and millets.

Example day: a 1,400-calorie Indian vegetarian PCOS plan

Meal Menu Approx. kcal
Breakfast Mint chutney with 2 moong dal chillas 280
Mid-morning 2 walnuts + 5 almonds 110
Lunch Salad, 1 bowl cabbage sabzi, 1 bowl chana dal, 2 jowar rotis 460
Evening Sprouts chaat, 1 bowl 150
Dinner Cucumber salad with 1 bowl foxtail-millet and moong dal khichdi 400

Good foods for PCOS

  • Low-GI carbs: whole-wheat roti, quinoa, brown rice, oats, ragi, bajra, jowar
  • Protein: chicken, fish, eggs, tofu, curd, paneer, rajma, chana, dal
  • Fibre: whole fruit (orange, berries, apple, guava), sprouts, salads, vegetables
  • Healthy fats: small amounts of mustard or olive oil, seeds (pumpkin, flax), nuts

Foods to cut back on

  • Packaged juices, sugary drinks, sweets and sugar
  • Bakery items, biscuits, white bread and maida
  • Processed foods and deep-fried snacks
  • Big servings of white rice

Can changing your diet really make a difference to PCOS?

It can. For overweight women with PCOS, a 5–10% drop in body weight may improve insulin resistance, ovulation and how regular cycles are. Food works best combined with good sleep and regular movement — 150 minutes or more a week. Medicines like metformin, or treatment for excess hair and acne, are needed by some women; your doctor can advise you.

Hoping to get pregnant? Try the ovulation calculator and, if your cycles vary, select “My cycles are irregular”.

Your questions, answered

Is there one diet that works best for PCOS?

The guideline does not prefer any single named diet. Aim for low-GI whole grains, beans and dal, fruit, vegetables and lean protein while keeping sugar and refined flour low — and choose a plan you can stick to for the long run.

Do I have to give up rice if I have PCOS?

No — moderate portions are fine. Millets or brown rice are better options, and eating rice alongside curd, vegetables and dal reduces its impact on blood sugar.

Should women with PCOS avoid dairy?

Strong evidence for cutting out dairy is lacking. Plain curd, milk and paneer provide good protein; if they seem to make acne worse, select “No dairy” in the generator.

How quickly can I expect to lose weight with PCOS?

Roughly 0.5 kg a week on a daily 500-calorie deficit. Progress may seem slower with PCOS, yet losing even 5% often helps periods.
