Can diet help with endometriosis?

Diet does not cure endometriosis, which is treated with surgery, hormones or pain relief. Even so, many women feel better on an anti-inflammatory way of eating: lots of whole grains, fruit and vegetables, omega-3 fats, and less ultra-processed food, alcohol and red meat. Some research associates eating more red meat and trans fat with a higher risk of endometriosis, and more omega-3 with a lower risk, although the evidence remains limited.

Building an endometriosis-friendly plate

Pick Reason
Chia, flaxseed, walnuts, oily fish Omega-3 fats might lower inflammation
Whole grains, dal, fruit, vegetables Fibre eases bloating and supports hormone balance
Foods rich in iron Heavy periods can lead to anaemia
Less alcohol and red meat Associated with more inflammation in some research

Bloating is common, and keeping a symptom and food diary can uncover your own triggers. With a dietitian’s support, some women trial a low-FODMAP diet. Hoping to conceive? Read the fertility diet plan.

Your questions, answered

Are there foods that can trigger endometriosis symptoms?

There is no one list for everyone, but alcohol, red and processed meat, trans fats and very sugary foods are most often linked with worse inflammation. A diary helps you spot what affects you.

Is cutting out gluten or dairy worth trying?

Only if you notice they make symptoms worse. Dropping whole food groups unnecessarily can lower your intake of nutrients such as calcium — try it with a dietitian’s help.

Can changing what I eat get rid of endometriosis?

No eating pattern has been shown to clear endometriosis lesions. Alongside medical treatment, diet may ease symptoms and support general health.
