What does a keto diet involve?

A ketogenic diet limits carbohydrates to roughly 20–50 g a day — meaning no sugar, roti, rice or most fruit — so your body burns fat and produces ketones. Early weight loss can be rapid (partly water) and blood sugar may drop, but it is difficult to stick with, and long-term research does not show it outperforms other diets for weight loss. The generator draws on a dedicated keto food list and applies a calorie deficit if you select weight loss.

Eat Avoid
Fish, chicken, eggs, cheese, paneer Upma, poha, bread, roti, rice
Low-carb vegetables: beans, lauki, capsicum, cabbage, cauliflower, spinach Peas, corn, sweet potato, potato
Coconut, seeds and nuts Sweets, honey, jaggery, sugar
Butter, cream and curd in moderation All fruit juice and most fruit
Coconut, mustard or olive oil Large servings of beans and dal

Who should avoid keto

  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Anyone with type 1 diabetes, or with type 2 treated using insulin or sulfonylureas (risk of ketoacidosis and low blood sugar)
  • People with kidney, liver or pancreas disease, or a history of kidney stones
  • Anyone with an eating disorder, and people taking blood-pressure medicines (keto lowers BP)

In the first week, “keto flu” — tiredness, headache, constipation — is common; drink water and get enough fibre and salt. A plan that is lower in carbs but less extreme, such as our diabetes or weight loss plans, tends to be easier to keep up.

Your questions, answered

Is a vegetarian keto diet possible in India?

Yes — with tofu, seeds, nuts, curd, cheese, paneer and low-carb vegetables — though it’s restrictive and fibre can be low. Plan it carefully.

How much weight will keto take off at first?

Typically 2–4 kg over the first week or two, mostly water. Beyond that, fat loss comes down to calories, just as with any diet.

Should keto be a long-term diet?

Its long-term safety has not been well established, and many people put weight back on after stopping. Talk to your doctor and think of it as short-term.
