Can what you eat reduce hair fall?
Food helps when hair loss comes from crash dieting, iron deficiency or too little protein — all very common in India. On its own, it won’t halt genetic thinning or hair loss caused by PCOS or thyroid disease. The generator prioritises iron- and protein-rich dishes, holds calories at maintenance level (or slightly below, if you choose), and adds seeds for omega-3 and zinc.
| Nutrient | Role in hair | Food sources |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | Hair is built from keratin, which is a protein | Soy, chicken, fish, eggs, paneer, dal |
| Iron | A top cause of hair shedding in women is low iron | Eggs, meat, chana, rajma, greens |
| Zinc | Supports hair repair and growth | Dairy, dal, nuts, pumpkin seeds |
| Biotin | Needed for keratin, though deficiency is rare | Seeds, nuts, eggs |
| Vitamin D | Low levels are associated with hair loss | Fortified milk, fish, eggs, sunlight |
Shedding that starts 2–3 months after childbirth, surgery, illness or a crash diet (telogen effluvium) generally settles by itself once you are eating well. See a doctor about patchy hair loss, a widening parting or hair loss alongside irregular periods — and ask for ferritin (iron), thyroid and vitamin D tests.
Your questions, answered
Is there one best food for hair growth?
No — above all, hair needs enough iron and protein. Together, seeds, nuts, greens, fish, paneer, dal and eggs cover most of what it needs.
Are biotin supplements worth taking for hair?
Only when tests show a deficiency, which is uncommon. High doses of biotin can also distort thyroid and other blood test results.
When will I notice a change in my hair after improving my diet?
Hair grows roughly 1 cm a month, so expect it to take about 3–6 months before you see a difference.
