When to Take a Pregnancy Test

When to take a pregnancy test: use your last period or the date you had sex to find the earliest day a home test may work and the day it is most reliable.

Choosing the right day to test

A home test looks for hCG, a hormone your body only starts producing once a fertilised egg has implanted in the womb lining — typically 6–12 days after ovulation. hCG then climbs fast, which is why testing is most dependable from the day your period is missed. If you are not sure when your period should come, leave it 21 days or more after unprotected sex.

Tests marketed for “early results” may show a positive a few days ahead of a missed period, but a negative at that stage is often wrong.

Getting a result you can trust

  • Test with the first urine of the morning, when hCG is most concentrated.
  • Make sure the test is in date, and time the reading exactly as the leaflet says.
  • Negative but still no period? Repeat the test 3 days later.
  • Even a faint line usually counts as positive — test again in 2–3 days and book a doctor’s visit.
  • A blood test at the clinic can confirm the result and may pick up pregnancy slightly sooner.

Got a positive? Find your estimated due date and look at our pregnancy diet plan. Not yet? The ovulation calculator shows your fertile days.

Common questions

What is the earliest I should test after sex?

To be confident in the result, wait a minimum of 21 days following unprotected sex — or test on the first day of a missed period if your cycle is regular.

Could I be pregnant even with a negative test?

Yes. Testing too soon, using watery urine or ovulating later than normal can all give a false negative. Still no period? Repeat the test after 3 days.

Does the time of day affect the result?

It can. Early morning, before you drink much, is best because that is when hCG in your urine is most concentrated.

Is a blood test better than a home test?

A blood test done by a doctor can confirm pregnancy and may detect it a little earlier, but a home test taken at the right time is reliable for most people.
