Why food matters during menopause
When oestrogen levels drop, bone is lost more quickly, the risk of heart disease goes up, and weight tends to settle around the middle as muscle mass and metabolism decline. Diet cannot prevent menopause, but it can help look after your heart, bones and weight. The generator prioritises calcium-rich foods, adds an extra calcium boost each day, raises protein to preserve muscle, and gives a gentle 400-calorie deficit if weight loss is your aim.
Important nutrients after 45
| Nutrient | Daily goal | Food sources |
|---|---|---|
| Calcium | 1,000 mg (1,200 mg over 50) | Leafy greens, tofu, sesame, ragi, paneer, curd, milk |
| Vitamin D | 600–800 IU | Sunlight, fortified foods, fish, eggs; supplements if levels are low |
| Protein | Around 1–1.2 g per kg | Soy, chicken, fish, eggs, curd, paneer, dal |
| Fibre | At least 25 g | Seeds, fruit, vegetables, dal, whole grains |
Can diet ease hot flushes?
For some women, hot drinks, spicy food, alcohol and caffeine set off hot flushes, so keeping track can be useful. Soy foods contain plant oestrogens; research suggests a small effect at best, but they are a healthy source of protein regardless. Severe symptoms can be treated effectively — hormone therapy included — so speak to your doctor.
Your questions, answered
What causes weight gain around menopause?
Falling oestrogen moves fat towards the abdomen, and losing muscle with age reduces the calories you burn. A modest calorie deficit, protein with each meal and strength training can help.
What is the calcium target for women past menopause?
Around 1,200 mg daily for women over 50, preferably from food, along with adequate vitamin D. If your diet doesn’t provide enough, your doctor may recommend a supplement.
Is soy worth adding for hot flushes?
Some women may see a slight drop in hot flushes. Tofu, soy and soy milk are nutritious, but they don’t replace medical treatment.
