Understanding anaemia and iron

With anaemia, there is not enough haemoglobin in your blood to carry oxygen, which can leave you pale, tired, dizzy and short of breath. The most frequent cause is iron deficiency. According to the WHO, anaemia means haemoglobin under 12 g/dL in women who are not pregnant, 11 g/dL during pregnancy and 13 g/dL in men. India’s National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5, 2019–21) reported that 57% of women aged 15–49 had anaemia.

The generator packs your week with iron-rich meals and includes a vitamin C food at both lunch and dinner, since vitamin C can substantially boost absorption of plant (non-haem) iron.

Daily iron needs

Who Daily iron (US RDA)
Women aged 19–50 18 mg
During pregnancy 27 mg
While breastfeeding 9 mg
Men, and women aged 51+ 8 mg

The ICMR-NIN guidelines for India give slightly different numbers. If you already have anaemia, diet by itself usually can’t correct it fast — you will need iron tablets or other treatment prescribed by your doctor.

Top iron-rich foods

  • Haem iron (absorbed best): eggs, liver (avoid in pregnancy), mutton, fish, chicken
  • Plant iron: sesame and pumpkin seeds, jaggery (in moderation), dates, poha, tofu, soybean, chole, chana, rajma, ragi, bajra, methi, spinach (palak)
  • Pair with vitamin C: capsicum, tomato, orange, guava, amla, lemon

What reduces iron absorption?

  • Drinking tea or coffee with meals (because of tannins)
  • Having calcium supplements or lots of milk with the same meal
  • Eating very high-bran foods at every meal

Expecting a baby? Read the pregnancy diet plan — iron needs climb to 27 mg daily, and an iron-folic acid tablet is usually required.

Your questions, answered

What is the quickest way to raise haemoglobin?

Take any iron tablets your doctor prescribes, have iron-rich foods with vitamin C at each meal, and keep tea and coffee away from mealtimes. With treatment, haemoglobin generally begins to rise within 2–4 weeks.

Does fruit help with anaemia?

Fruit contains little iron, but its vitamin C helps your body absorb iron from the rest of your meal — oranges, guava and amla are great choices alongside food.

Are pomegranate and beetroot the best foods for anaemia?

Both are healthy, but neither is particularly rich in iron. Eggs, meat, chana, dal and leafy greens provide far more.

Is it possible to get enough iron on a vegetarian diet?

Yes, if you plan for it: have dal, beans, millets and leafy greens every day, add vitamin C at each meal and cook in iron pans. Because plant iron is less well absorbed, vegetarians may need around 1.8 times as much iron.
