How the US Navy method works for men
For men, the US Navy formula needs just three numbers: height, neck and waist. Fat stored around the middle widens the waist far more than the neck, so the gap between the two, adjusted for height, gives a sound estimate of body fat. The equations were developed by Hodgdon and Beckett at the Naval Health Research Center in 1984, and the US military still uses them for body-composition checks.
Body fat % = 495 ÷ (1.0324 − 0.19077 × log10(waist − neck) + 0.15456 × log10(height)) − 450, with every measurement in centimetres. The calculator converts inches for you.
For example, a man 178 cm tall with a 38 cm neck and a 90 cm waist comes out at about 20%, which sits in the “average” band below.
| Category (ACE, men) | Body fat |
|---|---|
| Essential fat | 2–5% |
| Athletes | 6–13% |
| Fitness | 14–17% |
| Average | 18–24% |
| Obese | 25% and above |
Measuring tips for men
- Neck: just below the Adam’s apple, with the tape sloping slightly down at the front.
- Waist: level with your navel, after a normal breath out. Do not pull your stomach in.
- Use a soft tape that sits snugly without pressing into the skin, and take each measurement twice.
- Measure again every 2–4 weeks, at the same time of day.
Why the waist matters more than the scale
In men, a growing waist is a better warning sign than body weight alone, because fat stored deep in the belly (visceral fat) is linked with heart disease and type 2 diabetes. If your waist is 90 cm (35.5 in) or more and you are of South Asian origin, or 94 cm (37 in) or more otherwise, also try the men’s heart health check and the diabetes risk score.
This is the men’s version of our body fat calculator, which also covers women by adding a hip measurement. More tools for men: Men’s Health hub.
Common questions
How much body fat is healthy for a man?
For adult men, about 14–24% covers the ACE “fitness” and “average” bands, and 25% or more is classed as obese. Athletes are often 6–13%.
How accurate is the Navy method for men?
It gives an estimate. For most men it lands within a few percentage points of a lab scan like DEXA — close enough to follow your progress over time. A very muscular neck or an unusual body shape can throw it off.
Why does the men’s formula not need a hip measurement?
Men tend to store fat around the abdomen rather than the hips, so neck and waist alone predict body fat well. The women’s version adds the hips.
Can I lose fat from my belly only?
No, fat cannot be targeted in one spot. Your waist shrinks as overall body fat falls, with a modest calorie deficit, strength training, enough protein and good sleep. The calorie calculator and protein calculator can help.
