Behind the numbers

Your stride is estimated from your height (roughly 41% of it). Steps are converted to distance, the time taken is worked out from your chosen pace, and the energy cost comes from MET values in the Compendium of Physical Activities, scaled to your body weight.

Pace Speed MET
Slow stroll 3.2 km/h (2 mph) 2.8
Easy 4.0 km/h (2.5 mph) 3.0
Moderate 4.8 km/h (3 mph) 3.5
Brisk 5.6 km/h (3.5 mph) 4.3
Very brisk 6.4 km/h (4 mph) 5.0

The “total” figure includes the energy you would use anyway at rest, while “extra” shows only what walking adds — the part relevant to weight loss. For a typical adult, 10,000 steps covers about 7–8 km and burns around 250–450 extra calories, depending on body weight and speed.

Combine your result with the daily calorie calculator to plan your intake.

Common questions

What does 10,000 steps burn for most people?

For an adult weighing 60–80 kg at a moderate pace, about 300–500 calories in total, with roughly 250–400 of those above resting needs.

Should I walk faster or simply walk more?

Either helps. A brisk pace burns more each minute and builds fitness, while extra steps at any speed add up across the day.

Can I trust my phone’s step count?

Phones and wearables can miss by 10–20%, and their calorie figures vary even more. They are best for comparing one day with another, not as precise readings.

Why does my weight change the result?

Moving a heavier body takes more energy, so the same walk burns more calories for a heavier person.
