The timing of implantation

Once fertilised, the egg moves along the fallopian tube and then embeds itself in the womb lining. A large study that tracked hormones daily found implantation took place 6 to 12 days after ovulation, with most pregnancies (84%) implanting on days 8, 9 or 10. These are the figures the calculator is built on.

Plenty of women notice no sign of implantation whatsoever, and that is completely normal.

Implantation after IVF

A blastocyst transferred on day 5 is already 5 days beyond fertilisation, so implantation commonly begins 1 to 5 days post-transfer. Your clinic will give you a date for the beta hCG blood test, usually 9–14 days after transfer — stick to their schedule instead of testing early at home.

How long after ovulation does the embryo implant?

Anywhere from 6 to 12 days, and most often on days 8 to 10.

Are there physical signs that implantation has happened?

A few women get light spotting or mild cramping, but the majority feel nothing at all. These signs cannot confirm a pregnancy on their own.

When will a test turn positive after implantation?

hCG begins to build once the embryo implants and a sensitive home test can usually pick it up 2–4 days afterwards. Waiting until the day your period is missed gives a more reliable answer.

Is the IVF timeline different?

Yes. Because a day-5 embryo is already 5 days old, implantation commonly begins 1 to 5 days post-transfer. Follow your clinic’s blood test date.
