Get comfy sitting up or lying on your left side, and count any movement at all — kicks, rolls, swishes, flutters. From week 28, aim for the same time daily, ideally when baby tends to be busy.

Past sessions

Fewer movements than normal, a change in the usual pattern, or no movements at all? Call your doctor or maternity unit straight away. Never wait until tomorrow, and never use a counter or home Doppler as reassurance.

What kick counting tells you

Movement is one of the ways your baby shows they are doing well. First flutters are usually felt somewhere between 16 and 24 weeks, and by the third trimester most babies settle into a pattern of busy and quiet spells. Learning what is normal for your baby makes it easier to spot a change early.

Using the counter

  1. Choose a time your baby tends to be lively — after eating or in the evening is common.
  2. Get comfortable lying on your left, or seated with your legs up.
  3. Press Start counting and tap once for each kick, roll, swish or flutter you feel.
  4. A common approach is “count to 10”: most babies make 10 movements comfortably inside 2 hours, often far quicker.

When to contact your doctor or maternity unit

  • Movements have slowed down, or the usual pattern has changed
  • You cannot feel your baby moving at all
  • Under 10 movements in 2 hours when counting to 10

Call straight away rather than waiting until tomorrow, and do not rely on a home Doppler for reassurance. It is a myth that babies move less near the end — the movements can feel different, but they should keep going.

Nearing your due date? Keep our contraction timer bookmarked.

Common questions

From which week should I track movements?

Many doctors advise noticing movements every day from around 28 weeks (or 26 weeks in a higher-risk pregnancy). Earlier on, movements are less predictable.

Is there a set number of kicks I should feel?

No single number applies to everyone — your baby’s own pattern is what counts. When counting to 10, the 10 movements usually come well within 2 hours.

Where are my counting sessions stored?

Only in this browser on your own device. Nothing is sent to HealthSensibly.

Can I use a home Doppler instead of counting?

It is not advised. A heartbeat on a Doppler does not rule out a problem, so contact your maternity unit if movements change.
